Self Publishing - Publicity for Your Book and Pricing

horizontal rule

The time to start thinking about selling your book is while you are writing it or, better still, consider selling book before published.

Pricing:

To determine the cover price of your book, you need to bear in mind:

bulletProduction costs (design/layout, setting and printing)

bulletMarketing costs (mailouts, advertising)

bulletOther costs, such as research time, telephone, postage, etc.

bulletdiscount to trade (usually 35%) if you intend selling through bookshops.

Publicity

Be ready to put your marketing campaign into operation as soon as, or just before, your book is published. Since you already know who your readers are likely to be, look for ways of telling them about your book.

Mailshots

Build up a database of potential customers, including:

bulletLocal book shops

bulletSpecialist book shops

bulletLibraries

bulletAssociations/clubs likely to be interested in the subject matter of the book

bulletIndividual customers (if you are thinking of producing a regular publication, you may consider selling by Mail Order).

Inform them in a simple, matter-of-fact letter, that your book is about to be published and how they can purchase it, what discount you are prepared to offer (per book and for larger orders), etc.

Remember

If you intend to send the book directly to readers, you should add the cost of post and packing onto the price.
