Self Publishing - Getting Your Book Printed

horizontal rule

Before getting a quote for printing, discuss your
requirements in some detail with your prospective printer. These could include:

bulletThe cost of setting and processing from your disk (which will be either word-processed or dtp files)

bulletThe quality of paper for both cover and inside pages

bulletWhether you will be using a second colour (known as a spot colour), perhaps on the cover

bulletThe binding method you would prefer ("Perfect" binding in which the pages are glued into the cover is the method most commonly used for paperbacks.)

bulletThe print run (number of copies).

Think carefully about your print run; carrying out some research prior to printing may help you assess the size of your market. Ask also about run-ons (extra copies to be printed at a later stage). Some companies now print books at unit costs, making extra batches of copies no more expensive than if they had been included in the original print run.

Some other words used in printing:

Bromide: a photographic image of the text or graphic to be printed.

Halftone: a black and white photograph scanned onto the page to be printed

Origination: the work involved in preparing all the
material for printing

Scanning: the process of transferring images
(photographs/illustrations) onto the page to be printed

Weight: the weight of paper, measured in grams.
