Self Publishing - Getting Your Book Listed

horizontal rule

The British Library

You are required by law to send one free copy of your book to the British Library, Bibliographic Services Division, Store Street, London WC1E 7DG.

Another five free copies must go to A T Smail, agent for the Copyright Receipt Office, 100 Euston Street, London NW1 2F1Q. These will be deposited
in libraries in Oxford and Cambridge and in the National Libraries of Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

The names of all books deposited with the British Library automatically appear in the British National Bibliography, a weekly listing of all new publications, and are held on the British Library's microfiche and database system. If you would like to have a British Library catalogue number to print in your book (on the title verso page), send advance notification of your book to the CIP (Cataloguing in Publication) Office at the British Library.

The International Standard Book Numbering Agency

Getting an ISBN Number (#):

To get your book distributed through the trade, you should apply for an international standard book number (ISBN) which is free from:

International Standard Book Numbering Agency
c/o Whitaker's
12 Dyott Street
London
W1CA 1DF

All titles with ISBN numbers are listed free in British Books in Print and The Bookseller, (trade journals published by Whitakers) and their details are held on a database system for use by the trade when ordering or referring to books requested by consumers.

When you receive your ISBN number you should get it printed on the Title Verso and on the back cover of your book. It might also be worth getting a bar code of the number, which should be printed on the back cover. Speak to your printer about this.
