Introduction

Self-publishing is not a new phenomenon. Many famous authors (including Rudyard Kipling, Virginia Woolf and Beatrix Potter) have published their own books. And with the technology and facilities available today, getting a book printed and into the marketplace is relatively a straightforward process. All you need is a flair for writing, a little technical know-how and plenty of enthusiasm.

The above is not intended to be an exhaustive guide to self-publishing, however, we do want to give you the true facts about publishing, including self-publishing, so you know what options are available to you outside of the usual methods.

Whatever you've been told, you really don't need anyone else to publish your book. If you can put words together lucidly, you CAN sell what you write.

To demonstrate what's achievable; my 11 year-old daughter writes fashion articles for a well-known girl magazine. For this she's paid more than the sum total of her weekly pocket-money allowance.

The point being: starting a career in publishing doesn't have to begin with book-publishing. If you have knowledge or experience in any subject of popular interest, there are companies out there who will pay you handsomely for that knowledge (not least, marketing companies).

Whether it's fiction, poetry, letters, newspapers,  magazines or even television and radio: all you need to do is instigate an approach... then prepare your response!

Good luck and happy publishing!
